What makes something true
Why do you believe the things you believe? Do you believe them because they are true? Or do you believe them because you want them to be true? And, how do you determine whether or not something is “true”?
Many people around the world believe in something called “relativism” where the “truth” is whatever you want to believe true as truth, even if that “truth” is not necessarily true. They believe that as long as they are strongly opinionated about a particular subject matter, that thing which they feel strongly about automatically becomes true ( even if in reality/actuality their ” truth ” is false ). This my friends is not what truth is.
Truth is an element which( by itself) is exclusive ( not inclusive ). Something that cannot bend, nor be contradicted once that element is ” deemed true “. It is something that is fact independent of opinion or perception. Once something is true it cannot be false. In other words once something is true it will always be true.
For example ( here is a true statement ) : As of 1/13/2014 the President of the United States is Barack Obama.
In my above claim, I have stated and/or suggested what I believe is a true statement. In order for this statement to be true it must follow the definition of what truth is. This means that in order for this particular statement ” Barack Obama is President in 1/13/2014″ be considered true, it cannot 1) contradict itself 2) be proven false
So is it true that Barack Obama is/or was president on 1/13/2014? The answer is “yes.” And because this statement is true/fact the answer can never be ” no “.Even if a decade passes and we then have a completely new president named Rick ( random name ) , it will always be “true” that on 1/13/2014 Barack Obama was “President”. No matter how strongly someone may not want to believe this to be true, this will always be true. If you genuinely believe that on 1/13/2014 that the President is not Barack Obama, does that then strongly opinionated belief become true? No it doesn’t, and this is because your belief it not what makes something true. Now yes it is possible to believe something and that “thing” which you believe in is “absolutely true “; but it’s not because you believe that ‘thing’ to be true that makes it ‘truth’, but rather , the thing you believe was true before you believed it to be true.
For example If I said this true statement ” The Sky is blue ” and then turned around and asked how many people believe this statement to be true, I’m confident that everyone reading this would say ” Yes I do believe that the sky is blue.” I then ask,is it everyone’s belief that the “sky is blue” what makes the sky blue? The obvious answer is no, and this is because the Sky is blue regardless of what ever color we want to believe the sky is. If we all who believe the Sky to be blue, suddenly decide to believe that sky is red, will this in fact change the actual color of our sky? No, and this is because the color of the sky is independent of our belief. Whether I choose to believe the sky is green , red, purple, brown or black the sky will always be blue. This is because on this subject matter there are not many truths, but one truth ( as for everything that is exclusively deemed trued). If the sky is one color, then it cannot be both blue and red at the same time, it is either one or the other. This same principle applies for everything that is considered truth.
So why is this important? Good question! Many people around the world all follow different ideologies/philosophy in which they believe in. And for almost any given subject matter there can be many different viewpoints on that same matter, but in reality there is only one truth. This is important because unless you know how to establish something as true you can be deceived. What does it mean to be deceived? Simple definition is believing something to be true that isn’t true, believing a lie to be true, or simply lying to yourself. And this by itself leads to a road of complete blindness! Once you have decided to believe in something that is false as true, you then by default are blind to any opposing views. This means the truth can be right in front of you, and you wouldn’t be able to tell. Some may say ” I know I’m not deceived , so this status isn’t relevant to me,” but that’s just it…. when you are deceived you don’t know that your deceived. To put it in perspective: being deceived is like being in a dream, and not know your dreaming. You don’t know that your dreaming till you actually wake up. metaphorically you waking up would be you coming to the truth.
Say for example a child who grew up all their life believing that their stepfather is their actually biological father. The child in this case is deceived, because all their life their ” truth ” of who they perceived their biological father to be , in reality is false. Now lets say you, as a friend who knows the truth, attempt to tell your friend the truth about who the identity of their biological father is. What do you think will happen? More then likely this individual will be hurt, and as a defense mechanism they will choose not to believe you. The question here then, is why don’t they believe you? Now there can be many reasons why one individual may not believe you, but in many cases the answer is universally the same. The reason this individual doesn’t believe you is because ” they don’t want to believe that what you are telling them is the truth, even though what you are telling them is the absolute true!”
my question to you as the reader.. ” is this person in this example you?” Many people choose what they want, and don’t want to believe, but this doesn’t make anything more or less true then it already is in its natural element. Could you be one who ” pick and chooses” what your truth is?
Many different viewpoints and ideologies across the world, how do we come to a conclusion on what is true and what isn’t. To find the truth you must first take off all biasness and prepare to face it.
So my next question is …do you want to know the truth? What if that “truth” was something that made you feel a little uncomfortable? What if it was something that required a sacrifice? Many people answer yes, but once they see how far they actually have to go… they then give up. The “truth” is not for the easily discouraged. It is for those who are willing to persevere till the end. The Bible says in Ecclesiastes9:11 and Mark13:13 that ” the race is not for the swift, but he that shall endure unto the end”. Jesus says in John14:6 that he is ” The truth”.
Many people will disclaim this statement simply because “they don’t want to believe it.” Many will say they accept him as their truth, but then choose only the certain parts they like as the truth. When you follow Jesus it’s either all or northing. Your either hot or cold, but not lukewarm ( revelation 3:16) Which side will you choose? I hope you was blessed from the reading of this passage. God bless!
